Walk in Liberty: 6 Scriptures to loose you from the grip of guilt and shame over past mistakes

Article By Paula Washington // EEW Magazine Online // Spiritual

We live in a society where cancel culture is prevalent, and people revel in the chance to shame you for your mistakes and make an example out of you. But God doesn’t work the way people do. He forgives, covers, and gives you a clean slate when you ask for mercy.

If you have been feeling guilty over a bad decision or past mistake, read the 6 Scriptures recommended by EEW Magazine Online, and set your mind free.

“But the Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame.” (Isaiah 50:7)  When others’ words of judgement, looks of condemnation and whispers hurt you, God is there to help you. He doesn’t kick you when you’re down. He lifts up your head and gives you another chance. Keeping this in mind, spend your time focusing on how God sees you and not how other people view you.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9) Have you ever confessed wrongdoing and apologized to a judgmental and unmerciful person? They refuse to accept your apology, and they withhold forgiveness. But God does just the opposite. He generously gives mercy when you confess and ask for it. He wipes your slate completely clean and gives you a chance to start again—even though you don’t deserve it.

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1) Condemnation, guilt and shame are not from God. Once you give your heart to Christ, though you are still imperfect and make mistakes, He erases the shame and covers your sins in His precious blood. This is the supernatural work of the cross. When Jesus died, He nailed all your sins to that old rugged tree.

“He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.” (Micah 7:19) The extension of God’s grace and mercy to you is not a one-time offer. He gives His love, compassion and forgiveness again and again. No matter how many times you fall, He stretches forth His loving hand and lifts you up while casting your ugliest sins into the sea of forgetfulness to be remembered no more.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17) Don’t ever let anyone hold the past over your head—including you! Say goodbye to the old you and refuse to be bound by the sins of your past. A new day has come, and you are a brand new creation in Christ. Even when your old ways resurface, you can go boldly to the throne of grace to receive forgiveness and help.

“As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.” (Psalm 103:12) The shackles of guilt and shame have been removed from you by the power of Christ. Walk in your freedom. Embrace your new life of liberty, and remember that your mistakes and transgressions are no longer a part of who you are today. Even if you recently slipped up, when you ask for forgiveness, imagine God taking that sin and tossing it millions of miles away and giving you another fresh start. His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23).

You are free from the yoke of sin, loosed from the shackles of shame, and the stain of guilt has been erased. You are no longer tied to your old self and your bad decisions, so give yourself permission to walk in your freedom.
