News broke in August 2019 that women’s ministry leader Dianna Hobbs was in the ICU after suffering a ministroke and dozens of seizures, but no one outside of her closest circle of family members and friends knew what led to her harrowing ordeal until today.

In a video uploaded on Hobbs’ YouTube channel Tuesday, July 7, the 43-year-old revealed that she had a bad reaction to Bacrtim, an antibiotic used to treat a staph infection she contracted after surgery.

“The night I took it, everything was okay,” said the blogger and nonprofit founder. But then, she said she woke up in the wee hours of the morning with dizziness and a headache and “felt weird.”

A few hours later, at around six in the morning, Hobbs, whose previous testimony of healing encouraged believers around the world in 2016, said, “My speech was slurred,” and “I had trouble forming sentences.”

After that, a series of disturbing manifestations in her body – especially numbness on her left side – sent her to the ER where she began convulsing. Immediately, she said doctors suspected a stroke and performed a CT scan to detect bleeding on her brain.

Bactrim, often prescribed by doctors and nurses, is a combination of two antibiotics, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. It is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. Users typically experience minor if any side effects at all. However, a rare serious side effect of the drug is seizures, which Hobbs experienced.

In the emotional video titled, “This Is So Hard. Life After My Ministroke,” Hobbs shares video clips of the first early, minor seizures she had in the ER before the convulsions turned violent, landing her in the ICU.

Before being discharged, Hobbs overcame the ordeal and miraculously began walking, talking and breaking through the physical, mental and speech limitations doctors thought would last long-term. Yet, nearly one year later, Hobbs said she still struggles with crippling anxiety, panic attacks and the “frustrating” side effects of her brain trauma.

Before closing out the video, the inspirational author of God Did It requested prayer and explained why she shared the video: “I don’t want you to see the highlight reel of my life and never my struggles, because that’s not being honest. I think it’s important to be genuine,” she said.

Hobbs added, “If, from this video, you learn that, just because we love God doesn’t mean we don’t struggle and that He’s still with us, and His grace is sufficient, then it was worth every awkward moment in making this video.”
