Stressed? 5 Scriptures to read when life gets to be way too overwhelming

Article By Tamara Wilson // EEW Magazine // Spiritual

Let’s be honest. Life can get overwhelming sometimes. Bills. Family problems. Work pressures. Health issues. Conflict. It can be stressful.

So then, how do you handle it when you feel overwhelmed, exhausted, frazzled, and unable to cope with life? You run to the word of God.

EEW Magazine Online is sharing our favorite Scriptures to help you in times when you feel like you’re in over your head and about to drown.

“From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety, for you are my safe refuge, a fortress where my enemies cannot reach me.” (Psalm 61:2 NLT)

When you hit an emotional rock bottom, Christ is the Rock at the bottom. He will not only catch you when you fall, but He will lift you up and elevate you above your enemies—whether those enemies be emotional, mental, physical, or spiritual.

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6: 34 NIV)

Today’s problems are sufficiently overwhelming, and it isn’t helpful to drive yourself even crazier thinking about what you have to deal with next week, next month, next year, or the next day for that matter! Live in the moment. That goes for both good times and bad.

“The LORD is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.” (Psalm 28:7 NLT)

Trusting the Lord is the perfect cure for overwhelm. When you get too stressed, it guaranteed that you have quit leaning on God and started leaning on your own understanding. When you walk by faith, you’ll have joy in hard times, a song in your heart, and a heart full of gratitude.

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.  (Matthew 11:28-30 ESV)

Life is hard, but Christ’s yoke is easy. The cares of the world place burdens upon your shoulders, but Christ lifts them. The frenzied days get you all worked up, but Christ gives you rest. Accept His invitation to come to Him. Take your heavy burdens to the Lord in prayer. His strong arms can carry both them and you at the same time. In Him, you’ll find rest for your weary soul.

When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your consolations delight my soul. (Psalm 94:19 NASB)

Anxious thoughts will overwhelm you quicker than anything else, won’t they? On many occasions, what’s going on inside your head is more stress-inducing than what’s happening in your real life. If your thoughts are toxic, negative, and fear-filled, read the word of God. Let His promises comfort you. That discouragement will quickly turn into delight.

None of us can escape the low valleys and dark seasons. But we can go through them with joy, peace, strength, courage, and faith. In order to do that, however, we must read, study, and meditate on the word of God. His word lights the way and lightens your load!
