The powerful, gospel-themed Verzuz battle—Easter Sunday edition—featured two Grammy-winning gospel sibling duos, Mary Mary and BeBe & CeCe Winans.

Live from the historic Vibiana venue in downtown Los Angeles, the beloved singers churned out supporters’ favorite tunes. And to cap it all off, the legendary Stevie Wonder delivered soul-stirring, surprise closing remarks that resonated with both the online and onsite audiences.

“I really didn’t come to say anything, but I just want to say, what a perfect way to celebrate this Resurrection Day,” said 71-year-old Stevland Hardaway Morris, more commonly known by his stage name, Stevie Wonder.

Flanked by the evening’s featured talent, he continued, “It was wonderful just to hear the music, the celebration of the Most High.”

Then the “Superstition” singer turned his attention toward current events, delivering a scathing rebuke to those who seek to oppress and divide Americans through hatred.

“For those of you who choose to hate, for those of you who choose to not make sure that everyone has voting rights, for those of you that take 1200 years to sign an anti-lynching law”—a remark that elicited loud cheers from the crowd—"Listen, I just want to say one thing. God has made a promise to us that He will fulfill. But America, you have so much possibility. Grow up and get the job done.”

Once he was finished with his commentary, Erica Campbell, one-half of Mary Mary, fittingly said, “Mic drop.”

On Instagram, Erica, 49, wrote, “I wish I could explain the magnitude of Sunday night and all I feel in my heart! The joy overflows. It’s overwhelming to walk through doors God has opened!”

She continued, “There was so much joy and love in the room...so much unity. I believe God got the glory.”

After expressing her love for BeBe Winans and CeCe Winans as well as her sincere thanks for the supportiveness of fans, she concluded by writing, “Let’s share the gospel with as many as we can for His glory.”
