Former first lady Michelle Obama expressed dismay over the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the constitutional right to an abortion and urged people to view the ruling as a call to action.

“I am heartbroken for the people around this country who just lost the fundamental right to make informed decisions about their own bodies,” Mrs. Obama said in a statement.

“For more than a month, we’ve known this day was coming—but that doesn’t make it any less devastating,” Mr. Obama said on Twitter, adding that the court “relegated the most intensely personal decision someone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues—attacking the essential freedoms of millions of Americans.”

The Obamas urged people to get involved with groups that advocate for abortion rights.

“This horrifying decision will have devastating consequences, and it must be a wake-up call, especially to the young people who will bear its burden,” Mrs. Obama said.
