Former President Donald Trump, who was strongly courted by conservative Christians, credits divine intervention for the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, stripping constitutional protects for abortion rights in America.

“God made the decision,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News.

“This brings everything back to the states where it has always belonged,” he continued. “This is following the Constitution and giving rights back when they should have been given long ago.”

Trump, 76, who still has strong support among his right-leaning base—both Black and white— for a possible reelection run in 2024, is widely credited with laying the groundwork for the Court’s decision which he addressed in a statement Friday.

His three appointees to the court — Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett —formed the backbone of the 5-4 majority that overruled past decisions upholding abortion rights. Kavanaugh and Barrett each replaced former justices — Anthony Kennedy and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, respectively — who had backed abortion rights.

Trump said the abortion decision and others that favor conservatives “were only made possible because I delivered everything as promised, including nominating and getting three highly respected and strong Constitutionalists confirmed to the United States Supreme Court.”

The former president added, “It was my great honor to do so!”

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that had provided a constitutional right to abortion. The ruling is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states, although the timing of those laws taking effect varies.

Some Republican-led states will ban or severely limit abortion immediately, while other restrictions will take effect later.
