$5 at a Time, Bible Outreach Pushes Toward 5,000 Bibles for Orphanages

Empowering Everyday Women Ministries needs $15,000 to finish its drive to place 5,000 Bibles in orphanages, enough to cover about 3,000 more Bibles at roughly $5 each.

The ministry's Bible Outreach program set the goal to reach children across multiple orphanages. Its founding appeal centers on South Africa, where 2.3 million children are orphaned, according to Statistics South Africa's 2018 General Household Survey as reported by the fact-checking site Africa Check.

"A Bible can transform a child's life," Dianna Hobbs, the ministry's founder, wrote in a letter on the program's page. "For these children, Bibles are lifelines of hope."

Each Bible costs about $5 to buy and distribute. A $25 gift provides Bibles for five children, $50 reaches 10 children, and $250 supplies an entire orphanage unit, according to the program.

Three staff members run the work. Priscilla Adams, the program's director, oversees planning and the expansion of its global distribution, including logistics and partnerships. Marcy Barone, the program manager, handles daily operations, from distribution teams and local partners to inventory and delivery. Monica Achebe, the global liaison, travels to meet pastors, nonprofits and orphanages, assesses their needs and reports back on the regions in greatest need.

Hobbs framed the remaining gap as a shared effort. "Each of us is one person," she wrote. "Together, we are an army."
