Dignity Kits Bring Hygiene Essentials and a Bible to Girls in South African Orphanages
EEW Magazine Online is published by Empowering Everyday Women Ministries, Inc. This story covers the ministry's own work.
For $30, Empowering Everyday Women Ministries packs a box that many girls in orphanages and women in remote or war-torn regions cannot get on their own: sanitary pads, a toothbrush, daily care products, a Bible and a written message of encouragement.
The boxes, called dignity kits, are the work of the ministry's Worthy Women Initiative. They go to adolescent and teen girls in South African orphanages and to women in war-torn and remote regions who lack basic hygiene supplies, according to the program.
The need reaches far beyond any one country. An estimated 500 million women and girls lack access to menstrual products and adequate facilities for managing menstrual hygiene, according to the World Bank.
For girls in orphanages and women in crisis zones, the program says, getting through a period without supplies wears on physical health, emotional well-being and dignity.
"Every detail is intentional, because dignity is found in the details," said Dianna Hobbs, the ministry's founder.
The message tucked into each box is meant to remind the woman or girl who opens it that she is "seen, valued, and worthy," according to the program. Pairing hygiene supplies with a Bible reflects the initiative's view that care should reach the whole woman, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
A $30 gift provides one complete kit. Readers can give a kit through the Worthy Women Initiative page.
